SYNOPSIS: When the girl with the clockwork hand meets the boy with the beast heart, sparks fly in this poignant, adventure-filled debut.
Book 1 of the Steambound Trilogy: When Gabby’s hand turns to steam, her mom hires an engineer to build her a clockwork glove. It’s the last thing Gabby wants—if only she could be normal. But when her mom is attacked by something monstrous, normal is no longer an option. Now the only person she can turn to is a grizzled detective, who promises to help her become something … more.
Meanwhile, Kemple’s foster dad treats him like a slave. And the beatings are getting worse. So when a rebellious girl named Josephyn arrives—with a plan to escape to the city—he doesn’t hesitate. But there are creatures in Iron Bay whose slashes are worse than skin-deep. And as Kemple evolves into something inhuman, his search for a cure begins.
They are strangers in a city where carriages rattle, airships rumble, and where their own dark pasts continue to haunt them. Soon their paths will collide, and the girl who slays monsters will come face to face with the boy who is becoming a beast.

Review01Beast Heart shows dual perspectives between Gabby and Kemple as they face their own struggles and challenges throughout the story. I think it is just the right move as I like how both of them flourish and improve. Knowing at their young age, life has already shown them the gloom and bad side of living, and later chooses their own path of dealing with it. They both suffer in a different way that is in Kemple part was way more malevolent in terms of physical and also emotional though what Gabby’s feeling that time is the real worst – losing the one that you love and always been there for you – even emotionally. I wouldn’t blame her if she rushes on avenging her mom.

I did really enjoy this compelling story that enthralls me in three days straight. It is a great addition to YA novels with its brilliant storytelling and steampunk background and a touch of paranormal. Even this got the horror and brutal part, still, there are bits of humor and lightness as you explore the book. It’s an easy read and you get to catch on every scene. Also, you will like the actions and anticipations until the last page as you will grasp for more pages.

This is the first in the trilogy so you’ll have to wait for the next thing to happen and halt your thirst for more. I, myself, can’t wait for book 2 as I’m anticipating much more on this. I hope you add this to your radar with your next hunt to read.
